February the 22nd 2017. The legendary wednesday that will remain in the history of the medical faculty of constantine Algeria marked as “Their Fight Story”.
Their Fight Story was the event realised by SCORP constantine and for this first edition the team has chosen the theme of cancer…
It all started with a problem : how to deal we a cancer patient ? how can we give them the appropriate psychocological support they need ? how can we give their entourage hope and strenght to fight this battle by their sides ?
The solution was very obvious, but the realisation was the problem, we wanted something original, something that will mark their memories and touch them very deeply..
We started by creating a facebook page named “Their Fight Story” (https://www.facebook.com/Theirfightstory/), which was our way to communicate the details of our event to the public, but then we started something more interesting, we asked for the public to send us their stories with cancer to post them on the page and show solidarity with every cancer patient.
As the page started the become popular, one of our member wrote and performed a song that goes very well with the event “I’ll Rise” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x19P854SYZI) and we decided to create a video with the song, including all the members describing the event in it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x19P854SYZI)
So form a small idea, a small event, “Their fight story” became a campaign, a movement against cancer and solidary with all cancer patients and their families.
Then, we had to find an oncologist and a psychologist available to attend our event and ready to share with the public of peace of their knowledge (What is cancer ? What are the treatments ? How can we deal psychologicly with a cancer patient …) and find survivors ready to tell their fight stories againt cancer live at our event.
After 2 weeks of hard work and true dedicacion, we were able to organise the event and provide it with an oncologist and a psychologist, along with 3 cancer survivors.
Through the lecture given by the two specialists, the public learned some very instrucitve informations about cancer, how to deal with it and what to expect in such situation. Then, the most important part, we gave the public an opportunity to see thing form the patient’s window, understand their suffering through feeling it and more importantly give hope and strenght to every suffering human through some emotional survivors stories. Finaly through a very interesting workshop we called it a day. the participants gained a new perspective on cancer, and understood that cancer is not always associated with the word “death” and can be treated like any other disease.
Cancer patients and their entourage (family, friends and loved ones) through our activity gained a new support system consisting in the members of our activity, our facebook page in which they can send us their stories, and the public in general
Children’s mental health, Children’s rights with emphasis on non-discrimination
There is a huge problem with knowing how to deal with cancer patients in general and cancerous kids in particular in all societies, including Algerian society.
A cancer patient’s entourage does not know how to give him the appropriate psychilogical support that he needs, mainly because Algerian society always associates the word cancer with “death”, so the problem is that we don’t always understand the psychology of a cancer patient, how to help them, support them and believe in them .
Target groups and beneficiaries:
the activity was addressed directly to cancer patients and their entourage (Family, friends and loved ones) and the Beneficiaries are all society including especially medical students .
Objectives and indicators of success:
– The public attending the lecture given by a specialised pyschologist had to learn mainly how to give a cancer patient the appropriate psychological support they need.
– The public attending the lecture and listening to the stories of cancer survivors had to gain new levels of hope, and to learn that a cancer patient can survive , recover and have a normal life after the desiase .
– The public attending the lecture and participating in an interactive workshop had to learn to have a new perspective on cancer, and to understand that cancer is not always associated with the word “death” and can be treated like any other disease.
– Cancer patients and their entourage (family, friends and loved ones) through our activity had to gain a new support system consisting of the members of our activity, our Facebook page in which they can send us their stories, and the public in general .
Three weeks prior the activity
1- define necessary resources :
– Choosing the place of the activity which was the auditorium of Constantine’s medicine faculty
– Listing necessary speakers for this kind of activity which were an oncologist, a psychologist and few cancer survivors to tell their stories
– Choosing the appropriate way to communicate the details of our activity to the public which was through a Facebook page
– Listing the needed materials
2- division of action based on qualification, motivation and disponibility of the membres
Two weeks prior the activity
1- Concrete action :
First thing was dividing all members into groups ;
Obtaining the authorization to use the auditorium for our event
Then, a small group had to go to the hospital , to try and find a qualified oncologist and psychologist available ion the date choosen and is ready to help us and do the lecture
simultaneously, another group was responsible for the creation of a Facebook page administrating it and inviting the public to share with us their stories with cancer and publishing them on the page
After that, all members had to try and find a cancer survivor ready to come to the event and share their story with the public to give hope and strength to other cancer patients and their entourage, and luckily enough we were able to find three of them.
The final thing was to try to find a small workshop or activity to end our event with which was very easy (Try to combine all the ideas to come up with an original one
3 days prior to the activity :
final meeting to discuss and review the evolution of the actions
listing needed materials to buy
Revision of the plan A
Coming up with 2 other plans : Plan B and Plan C
